Sleepless Nights, published in 1978, continues the artist’s fascination with women, their bodies, and their clothes. Models are depicted partially nude, clad in orthopedic corsets or leather saddles, and photographed in various locations outside of the studio. Newton’s carefully staged compositions, both sensual and provocative, suggest the use of fashion photography as a pretext for creating a new and highly personal genre. A kind of mini-retrospective in itself, this book comprises images Newton shot for various magazines, especially Vogue, and was instrumental in elevating him to an icon of fashion photography.
